How Menopause Changes our Breasts

Women shopping supportive, comfortable DOUBL bras. Women curious about how menopause changes their breasts in their 50s and 60s.

Remember those early days of puberty when everything started to change? Suddenly, the world seemed full of new possibilities, but also new challenges, especially as our bodies transformed in ways we couldn’t quite understand. Fast forward a few decades, you face another monumental shift—menopause. Just as puberty brought about dramatic changes, menopause ushers in its own set of transformations, particularly affecting our breasts. Let’s explore this journey, understanding the science behind it and how these changes can be navigated and embraced.

One of estrogens' many roles is keeping breast tissue hydrated and elastic. As estrogen levels drop through menopause, breasts can shrink, becoming less firm and losing their shape. As a result, sagging comes into the picture.

Some women experience a growth in breasts during and following menopause. 208 women aged 45–65 years were surveyed about their breasts, their bras and how they felt aging may have influenced these factors. 24% of these women reported an increase in breast size as they age. Although breast growth is not directly tied to menopause, hormonal weight-gain can have you see an increase in breast size.

And of course, as our breasts undergo changes, tenderness and discomfort occur.

According to obstetrician/gynecologist Bryan L. Yingling, MD, here are 5 ways to reduce breast tenderness (as well as hot flashes):

  1. Stress: Stress has a way of impacting everything in our bodies, and our breasts are no different. Reducing stress can reduce the likelihood and severity of breast tenderness.
  2. Diet: Eat a healthy diet, consuming fats in moderation. Limit salt which can cause fluid retention, avoid spicy foods, and limit alcohol consumption. Also, avoid cigarette smoke.
  3. Caffeine: Avoid coffee, chocolate, and caffeinated soda, much easier said than done!
  4. Clothing: Wear non-constricting, comfortable clothing. Make sure your bra is the right size and of good quality.
  5. Stay cool: Keep your bedroom cool at night, chill pillows, and dress in light layers.

Although we can’t help you with avoiding caffeine, DOUBL can help with a few other items on that list. DOUBL bras are made exactly to your shape and size, ensuring optimal comfort without sacrificing support. Our bras are wire and foam free, making them much more comfortable when experiencing breast tenderness. Additionally, DOUBL bras are made of antibacterial, cooling, sweat-wicking material.
