How Menopause Changes our Breasts

Remember those early days of puberty when everything started to change? Some women experience a growth in breasts during and following menopause. 208 women aged 45–65 years were surveyed about their breasts, their bras and how they felt aging may have influenced these factors. 24% of these women reported an increase in breast size as they age. According to obstetrician/gynecologist Bryan L. Yingling, MD, here are 5 ways to reduce breast tenderness (as well as hot flashes): 

  1. Stress: Stress has a way of impacting everything in our bodies, and our breasts are no different. Reducing stress can reduce the likelihood and severity of breast tenderness. 
  2. Diet: Eat a healthy diet, consuming fats in moderation. Limit salt which can cause fluid retention, avoid spicy foods, and limit alcohol consumption. Also, avoid cigarette smoke.
  3. Caffeine: Avoid coffee, chocolate, and caffeinated soda, much easier said than done! 
  4. Clothing: Wear non-constricting, comfortable clothing. Make sure your bra is the right size and of good quality.
  5. Stay cool: Keep your bedroom cool at night, chill pillows, and dress in light layers.
